We’ve just come back from a nifty trip to home country in Montana, visiting both our adult kids in Missoula and Livingston, and were impressed by the porch garden our photojournalist daughter in Missoula has created on her apartment porch in Missoula, pretty damned far north (at least for those of us in the States) by any measure.
We actually ran a very large garden during our years in Kalispell, Montana (roughly two hours north of Missoula), starting seeds in warming trays under grow lights in January or early February, in time to grow plants strong enough to survive the chilly Montana spring (pending the crop, we planted late March through late May). Even that far north, with some coaxing and the early start, we were able to grow a full array of different herbs, lettuces and greens, onions, and peppers, in addition to the more typical squash, beans, tomatoes, with several large beds of strawberries thrown in.
Jess doesn’t have that much room of course, yet with some care and innovative planting she’s started a very fine herb and lettuce garden, and has already started drying chives and mint, and enjoyed several salads from her garden.
Making a container garden work even in Montana with her long, dark winters is solid proof you can grow almost anything just about anywhere. With some protection there’s still plenty of time to get some late starts potted this week wherever you are.
Cheers.
